Competition Details

Step into the role of a Destination Marketing Organization (DMO) and put your marketing skills to work. Choose a city or region in Utah and develop a campaign that positions your destination as a compelling place to visit. Your goal is to identify what makes the destination unique and develop a strategy for sharing that story with potential travelers.

Start by researching your destination and the experiences that drive visitation—from outdoor recreation and cultural attractions to festivals, events, dining, accommodations, and local traditions. Then think beyond individual attractions. Consider how branding, partnerships with local businesses and organizations, social media, events, influencer collaborations, and other marketing strategies could work together to strengthen the destination and reach your target audience.

Your campaign should also consider the bigger picture. Effective destination marketing doesn't just attract visitors—it can support local businesses, encourage economic development, and create new opportunities within a community. The strongest proposals will combine creative ideas with thoughtful research and a realistic strategy for positioning the destination for success.

Once your campaign is complete, you'll present your proposal through a 10-minute recorded presentation supported by slides. You'll submit both your video and a PDF of your presentation for evaluation. Judges will consider your creativity and innovation, marketing strategy, branding and storytelling, overall impact and persuasiveness, and the visual quality of your presentation.

Big Ideas. Real Cash Prizes.

The first-place winner will receive $2,000, awarded to the proposal that demonstrates an outstanding combination of creativity, strategy, storytelling, feasibility, and presentation.

And there are more opportunities to win. Second place will receive $1,500, and third place will receive $1,000—for a total of $4,500 in cash prizes awarded through the competition.

More importantly, the competition gives students an opportunity to take what they're learning in the classroom and apply it to a real-world destination marketing challenge—building a project they can talk about in interviews, portfolios, and professional opportunities for years to come.
