Adventure meets learning in Vernal! Students will experience one of Utah’s newest outdoor attractions, the Ashley Gorge Via Ferrata, and get a firsthand look at how an innovative adventure experience can become a catalyst for tourism and community development.

During the trip, students will meet with Economic Development Director, Travis Campbell, to learn how the Via Ferrata came to life and the role it plays in Vernal’s growing tourism economy. They’ll explore the connections between outdoor recreation, economic development, destination development, and the local community while hearing directly from the people helping shape Vernal’s future.

But this Field Trip Friday isn’t just about learning from the sidelines—you’ll experience the attraction for yourself. The Via Ferrata is an extensive climbing adventure involving sustained climbing and inclined terrain, so some prior climbing or similar outdoor experience is recommended. Participants should be comfortable supporting and moving their own body weight while climbing an incline and should be prepared for a physically active experience.

Students will spend the night camping in Vernal, giving them the opportunity to experience the destination as a visitor while building connections with fellow students and exploring the area. Camping gear is not required to participate: students may provide their own equipment or request camping gear from the J.W. Marriott, Jr. Institute when registering.
